I got a new monitor for my computer, and I absolutely love it. It is the VX2433WM by Viewsonic. I found it at newegg as I was searching for a 1080p monitor. They were asking $219.99 plus $9.99 in shipping. One thing that was making me nervous was newegg's policy of replacing LCD monitors only if they have 4 dead pixels or more. So, if they ship one with 1, 2, or 3 dead pixels, tough!
For this reason, I looked up the same monitor at B&H Photo and Video, an online store catering to photographers and videographers. I have bought from them many times. They have a 15-day return policy for any reason whatsoever. I felt that even though they were not a computer store and would probably charge a little more, knowing I would not get stuck with a lemon was worth the extra money.
Well, they do carry it. And they were asking less than newegg! $204.09 with free shipping within the US. Plus, it so happened it was the last day to buy one and get a $20 refund from the manufacturer. So, I ordered it.
I received it 2 days ago, and boy is it a nice monitor! It has three video inputs, VGA, DVI and HDMI. You could even plug in three different computers (or two computers and a Blu-ray player) at the same time and switch among them at will.
At first I had a hard time convincing my computer graphics card to go full 1080p. It offered 1080i, which is not what I needed. It also offered 720p, which is only 1280x720 pixels. It actually offered a larger resolution than that, but it was not the full 1080p (which is 1920x1080 pixels).
Then I clicked on "Adjust desktop size and position" in the nVidia control pannel (my video card is an old nVidia GeForce 6200 TurboCache). And that offered me to "Resize my desktop". When I clicked on that, the video card switched to full 1080p and has been in it ever since, even through reboots.
My computer has a DVI and a VGA output. I connected the DVI to the monitor. I do not use the VGA output.
My other computer, the Sony Vaio laptop has an HDMI output. So, I hooked an HDMI cable to the new monitor and connect it to my laptop when I am using it. This allows me to watch Blu-ray videos in the full 1080p resolution while sitting comfortably in my chair, with the laptop resting on the floor.
And, of course, I watch TV in full 1080p now.
This monitor has beautiful colors. Very sharp image. No bleeding. And, well, no dead pixels. It is a 24" monitor, just the right size for a computer monitor sitting on a desk (though it can be mounted on the wall, too). My only complaint: It does not include an HDMI cable. Luckily, I already had one. But if you want this monitor and want to hook it up with an HDMI source, make sure to order the HDMI cable. It does come with a VGA and a DVI cable, which is what most computers use.
If you are looking for a nice new computer monitor, which is of a good quality but does not cost an arm and a leg, I highly recommend this one. And I suggest you get it from B&H rather than newegg. Not only will you save money, you will rest easy in the knowledge that if there is something wrong with it (not likely, but you never know), you will be able to get it replaced.
By the way, last night I watched my favorite Czech DVD, one I had seen many times before, and I noticed a detail I had never seen before, thanks to this new monitor. Even though DVD resolution is much less than 1080p!
